My Passport For Mac Drag And Drop Not Working

Drag and drop. Here we will discuss dragging a piece of data from the (My) Documents folder to the external drive. This exercise can be repeated with Examples: Free Agent Go for Mac, Backup Plus Slim Portable Drive for Mac. Download for mac os x 10.6.8. Other family of drives will be versatile and allow you usage on both a. So yea, my external hard drive ( WD elements 2tb ) was working perfectly fine yesterday, nothing happened since (didnt drop it or anything) and now it's not working anymore.

Clearly, I don’t know what I’m doing with this external drive. First thing I did was use the Time Machine app to back up my machine to My Passport for Mac.

That worked fine. Then I thought I’d drag and drop all my photos from my Desktop to the external drive, like I would with a flash drive or such. All that happened is that all the file NAMES have copied to the My Passport, but all their names are there, greyed out, and all are indicated with zero bytes next to them.

I can’t do anything more with them like delete them (since I clearly did this wrong) because they’re considered still “in use”. I can’t eject the My Passport either, because it says it’s still in use. How do I a) remove all those (non) files from the My Passport so that the drive isn’t hung up anymore, and then b) how do I copy all the photos onto the drive which is really what I wanted it for in the first place? Or, have I bought the wrong kind of external drive for my Mac? I had the same problem.

Drag

I solved it by updating to the latest WD Drive Utility software. I then used the utility to delete my drive. I was able to eject through the utility (Right-click on drive icon in utility) and by way of clicking on the eject icon on the Mac. Then I activated the Sleep Timer and LED Setting to On through the utility. Then I could no longer eject via the Mac. Deleting the drive again and turning Sleep Timer to Off and LED to Off, I am now able to eject via the Mac.

I never tried the option to eject my drive through the utility before deleting it. That may work for you. But, those setting set to On are definitely a problem for me. They prevent me from ejecting via the Mac. I’m going to be filling the drive again.
